Google welcomes the Lunar New Year 2023 with the Year of the Rabbit doodle

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, Google has created a doodle that ushers in the year of the rabbit, the fourth animal of the zodiac in Chinese astrology, which has twelve. In Asian cultures, the rabbit symbolizes grace, beauty, mercy and good fortune. The Doodle artwork was done in both paper and digital to pay homage to this ancient paper folding and cutting technique called Jianzhi, which dates back to the 2nd century.

The Lunar New Year is considered a time of reunion and rebirth, marking the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Unlike the holidays associated with the Gregorian solar calendar, the traditional Chinese calendar marks the days of the year according to the ancient Chinese lunisolar calendar system, which bases the months on the phases of the moon. The festivities usually last for two weeks and begin with a night parade featuring floats, dragons, dancers and musicians.

For the occasion, Google has also created a digital exhibition accessible from the Google Arts & Culture website.
