Google boss announces the bad news

Finally, another American tech giant does not escape a substantial reduction in its workforce, while one would have believed in a different strategy focused only on a hiring freeze. This is not the case and there will also be a great social plan.

Head of Google and its parent company AlphabetSundar Pichai announces the approximately 12,000 job losses in the world. Knowing that the Alphabet group employed around 187,000 people at the end of September 2022, this is around 6% of the affected workforce.

Googlers – Google employees – affected by the job cuts have already been notified by email in the US. They will then be in other countries. Sundar Pichai indicates that the layoffs will affect all departments of the group, without going into details.

After a spectacular growth

The reasons given are similar to those of Microsoft, for example. The business environment has evolved out of phase with the massive hiring that occurred during a period of so-called spectacular growth during the pandemic.

Google also remains heavily dependent on revenue from its own advertising activities which are not spared the consequences of inflation, with a slowdown in growth and investment by advertisers.

In his letter to Googlers made public, Sundar Pichai says he assumes ” full responsibility for the decisions that have brought us to this point. “However, he mentions his confidence in the value of the group’s products and services and the early investments that have been made in theartificial intelligence.

Focus on artificial intelligence more than ever

An answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT (and advances in the GPT-3 language model) making a big splash is probably in the works. Especially since Microsoft is very interested in this technology and concerns have emerged for the Google search engine.
