the founders go back to work on AI

The New York Times reveals that Sergey Brin and Larry Page would be recalled by Google to accelerate its artificial intelligence plans as ChatGPT threatens its future.

The surprising popularity of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s tool, has created panic at Google. Just ask ChatGPT a few questions to understand all the potential that this tool could have in the future to generate faster and more relevant answers compared to a search engine like Google.

The threat

Microsoft understood this and intends to work twice as hard on AI, especially by working to merge ChatGPT and Bing. Google has therefore been on red alert for a few weeks to react as quickly as possible to this threat.

In fact, if a tool like ChatGPT were to replace requests to Google tomorrow in the uses of Internet users, the entire economy of the giant could be put at risk. Even today it is thanks to the ads displayed on its search engine and associated services that Google recovers most of its earnings. The company is structured around this product.

Google will launch more than 20 projects in 2023

the New York Times informs us that Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the two founders of Google, would return to the company to manage this crisis taken very seriously by Google. Objective: Oversee the giant’s strategy on AI adoption and give it a boost.

The two men would have validated the integration of the chatbot’s functions into the Google search engine. We can therefore imagine that in the future it will be possible to ask questions directly to Google, in a more natural way than today.

According to the American newspaper, there are more than 20 new products and a new version of the search engine that Google would like to unveil this year. These will not necessarily be applications aimed at the general public. Google would in fact prepare tools for the creators of Android applications, facilitating the generation or correction of the code, or more generally AI-based products for companies.

This is the first project Larry Page and Sergey Brin have been following so heavily since their departures in 2019. Since then, he might offer some advice on Google’s long-term plans, but they’d return to decision-making here.

Don’t go faster than the music

The challenge for Google is to ensure the security of the tools that the company would like to develop around AI. The company cannot afford to take the same risks as a startup like OpenAI.

The Google search engine must continue to deliver reliable results, without abusing the engine’s dominant position. A generative AI like ChatGPT is capable of pulling many databases from its sources. Google has to be careful not to infringe copyright to generate possible responses from its cat.

Last but not least, Google needs to make sure it doesn’t jeopardize its business model. How to offer responses in a conversation by integrating the notion of an advertising sponsored response.

The company therefore has to address important issues and wants to do it quickly to avoid any risk of new competition, while ensuring that it does not harm itself. We can understand the feeling of panic that transpires from this moment.
