Google sues SEO agency for fraudulent practices - SEO & Engine News

Google wants to stop the proliferation of scam artists that have invaded the web for many years and recently took legal action against companies trying to sell Google Business profiles and fake reviews by promising their customers better positions…

Good news: Google seems to have decided to strike hard if it believes that some SEO agencies are going too far with dishonest manipulation practices (companies deemed “malicious actors” by Google). This is what happened to the company GVerifier Technologies, in the United States, for the sale of Google Business profiles – the creation of which is free – and also for the sale of fake reviews promising placement on the first page.

G Verifier was then sued by Google for unfair practices, as the Mountain View company explains on one of its blogs: Today we’re taking legal action against scammers who tried to defraud hundreds of small businesses by impersonating Google via telemarketing calls. They have also created websites that offer to buy fake reviews, both positive and negative, in order to manipulate company profile ratings on Google Search and Maps. This practice exploits entrepreneurs and small businesses and violates our rules on misleading content (…) In 2021 alone, we blocked more than 12 million attempts to create fake business profiles by bad actors and nearly 8 million attempts to claim profiles companies that don’t belong to them. »

And this is not the only one of his actions of the same kind, as he also explains: “Earlier this year, we took proactive legal action to stop an attacker who was using a network of fraudulent websites to scam people, especially older Americans, with promises of puppies during the pandemic. And last year, we spearheaded the industry’s technical response to the Glupteba botnet and launched a successful legal action by making the matter public. Litigation is an important tool for deterring fraudulent activity, imposing punitive costs on fraudsters, and educating the public. »

When is this kind of process in France?

Of course, we dream of seeing Google bring this type of legal action in France, where this type of scam is also and unfortunately very widespread, as well as certain SEO agencies (and not always the smallest ones!) which say they are “accredited by Google” or “Google Certified SEO” to sell their scams. You just have to take a look at LinkedIn to see how many imposters there are (fortunately there are also some very good agencies, do not hesitate to review our 4 videos that give you how to find a bad SEO agency: N° 200, 201, 202 and 203) …

And when SEO agencies are in turn approached by other agencies that pretend to be Google by promising guaranteed first positions on competitive keywords (or that are never typed by anyone, for that matter, which is not better), then here is , is still an additional stage that is passed. Yes, it happens… Is Google ready to “clean up” to this level in France? I’m not so sure, unfortunately…
