Available on Netflix since January 20, sci-fi film Jung_E has climbed to the top of the platform’s top 10 films. A film with an interesting, but unsuccessful theme.
What is it about ?
In this heart-pounding sci-fi thriller, humans have fled the Earth that climate change has made uninhabitable. To end the war raging in the Shrine Arks, legendary mercenary Yun Jung-yi’s brain is cloned by a company seeking to create the ultimate soldier through combat AI.
Jung_E, a film written and directed by Sang-Ho Yeon starring Hyun-joo Kim, Soo-Yeon Kang, Kyung-soo Ryu… Available on Netflix
A sci-fi film based on artificial intelligence
Released on Netflix without trumpets or fanfares on January 20, the sci-fi film Jung_E has not escaped the enthusiasm of subscribers that (almost) always manifests itself when it comes to science fiction.
This lack of promotion is all the more surprising as the director of the film is none other than Sang-Ho Yeon, known for directing Last Train to Busan – a great success with audiences and critics – but also for being the co-creator of the Hellbound series.
Jung_E starts from a political dimension as he says that the Earth has been devastated by the effects of climate change, which has forced humanity to find refuge in refuges scattered throughout space. Only that a civil war breaks out, which has lasted for 40 years.
In this conflict, a warrior of exceptional qualities stands out. It is Yun Jung-yi (Kim Hyun-joo), a mercenary who forges a true legend for her skills as a military strategist with countless victories. But an injury on her mission leaves her in a vegetative state.
This is where the Kronoid company comes into play. This AI (artificial intelligence) development company for military use sets out to win the war by creating the ultimate soldier modeled after Yun Jung-yi by cloning his brain.
It is none other than her daughter Yun Seo-hyun (Soo-Yeon Kang) who leads the project called Jung_E, 35 years after her mother’s death. When the program is finally abandoned after multiple failed simulations, Yun Seo-hyun decides to save her “mother”.
Registered for the appointment
If the film does not lack interest because it raises real ethical questions about the use of artificial intelligence and the exploitation of the brain of human beings after their death, Jung_E is rather clumsy in its execution.
Aside from an apparent budget deficit that makes it look completely contrived, we think Sang-Ho Yeon is tangling with his point. He ends up supporting what he initially claims, leaving the film to end with an emotional climax rather than a rational one.
However, Jung_E managed to find his audience who didn’t fail to share his enthusiasm on Twitter. Small anthology:
“I cried a total of 3 times watching #jung_e. I thought it would be a simple sci-fi action movie. But it’s a heartbreaking mother-daughter drama set in an immoral, capitalist, oppressive cyberpunk future. yeon sang-ho and his team were thrilled.“
“I have to be honest, we watched Yeon Sang-ho’s #JUNG_E thinking it was more of a sci-fi action/thriller movie. So we were pleasantly surprised by the emotional mother/daughter story at the center.“
“Despite the simple plot, I especially like this scene where the AI recalled its past memories of Seo-hyun. The emotional depth of the story is well represented by both actresses. The late #KangSooYeon is amazing as expected and will be missed…“
“I never thought #JUNG_E would make me emotional, cry like a baby and leave me heartbroken! The story of Jung_E and his daughter is really beautiful but also the most heartbreaking I’ve ever seen. #KimHyunJoo is truly a queen 👑💖👏“
“I love this movie.. Read more about the action and you will be moved by the story of mother and daughter.. Watch it and you will not regret.. #JUNG_E“
“After seeing the trailer, I thought this movie was going to be Hollywood level, but I was wrong. Production quality: 📈📈📈 Story: 📉📉📉📉📉 #JUNG_E“
