Google allows more apps on Android Auto

Android Auto is available on both smartphones and cars. These large screens now occupy the majority of modern vehicles. However, usable applications are still limited. To underline its commitment to improving the experience with this system, Google has announced the opening of its platform to another category of applications.

With this addition, users will soon be able to control their smart home. The first IoT application that will eventually be supported on Android Auto and Android Automotive is already on its way. Developers are therefore led to create utilities that will facilitate this control.

What’s the point of adding new applications?

Android Auto is a replica of the smartphone. This system reproduces the information and functions of the mobile phone on the screen. It allows, among other things, to manage the phone without taking your eyes off the road. GPS navigation software with traffic alerts, POI utilities, multimedia and messaging applications is already available on this platform. The IoT device control feature will be added to this list in the coming months.

This Google announcement addresses the need to make the in-car experience even more convenient. Android Auto still has many good years ahead of it. However, this addition comes with some restrictions. For obvious safety reasons, the content of these applications must in no way distract the driver when on the road.

What features are offered?

With the arrival of the IoT application, the control of a smart home is done directly through Android Auto. The driver will then have the ability to view and monitor all connected devices. He will also be informed in real time of their status. The opening and closing of the garage doors, the management of the lights, such as turning them on or off, will take place through this platform. All other sensors will also be affected. A notification will be sent, for example, when the smart vacuum cleaner has finished cleaning the house.

Developers just need to add support for these features to their app and that’s it. The latest beta version already gives users a preview of how it works and what it can do. The stable version should arrive in the next few weeks. An arrival much awaited by users.
