Goossips: HTTP/HTTPS and SEO content quality

Some information on Google (and sometimes on Bing) and its search engine, gleaned unofficially here and there in recent days, with some answers to these agonizing questions scheduled this week: Having a site in HTTPS is mandatory to be well positioned on Google? Do SEOs only provide good quality content (lol)?

Here is a small collection of information provided by official Google spokespersons in recent days on various informal networks (Twitter, Hangouts, forums, conferences, etc.). So “gossips” (rumors) + Google = “Goossips” 🙂

Since the communication of the search engine is sometimes more or less subject to caution, we indicate, in the lines below, the level of confidence (reliability rate) that we recognize in the information provided by Google (from 1 to 3 stars, 3 stars representing the maximum confidence rate) – and not at the source that talks about it.

HTTP/HTTPS
John Mueller recalled on Twitter that the fact that a website is in HTTPS was absolutely not a requirement to be (well) ranked in Google search results. Many HTTP sites are well indexed and rank in the top results.

And luckily! HTTPS is not a guarantee of content quality, far from it. In fact, if we see fewer and fewer HTTP websites in search results, it’s simply because there are fewer and fewer HTTP sites! Remember that HTTPS is only a “tie-breaker” for Google, i.e. a criterion that allows it to decide between sites tied in terms of relevance score: if there is one in HTTP and one in HTTPS, HTTPS will win …
Low quality content
John Mueller explained on Twitter that “many SEOs and sites produce very low quality content that isn’t worth indexing (…) Just because it exists doesn’t mean it’s useful for users. »

Confidence rate:
It’s obvious. And many SEOs complain that their content isn’t indexed, when perhaps they should be questioning the quality of what they produce. It’s really, really hard for some to get the necessary perspective on what they put online…
